SOLUTION
Yes, any time. Feet-inches and sq ft are the default. Switch to metric under Settings, or from the units button in the editor's status bar.
Fields accept whatever you type: 12' 6", 12.5 ft, 3.8 m and similar all work. The plan itself doesn't change, only how sizes are shown and printed.
